Xenesys Inc. (Tokyo, Japan), engages in the development of OTEC, has initiated the realization of commercialization of OTEC plant in Tahiti, of which R&D has been carried out in OTEC R&D Center and Xenesys Imari Plant (Imai, Saga Pref., Japan). This news was released at an OTEC symposium held on October 17 in Saga Pref. (Japan). Xenesys will consider constructing the OTEC plants nearby such as hospital, industrial complexes, etc., which are now under construction in Tahiti, and reutilizing deep seawater, which is used for power generation, for air-conditioning.

In August 2008, Xenesys established a joint venture with Pacific Petroleum Company (PPC) for the industrialization and commercialization of OTEC. PPC is a company which has expanded its business in the petroleum field and related products in both retail and wholesale in Tahiti, New Caledonia and Vanuatu. The joint venture "Xenesys Pacific Research & Services s.a.s" undertakes the research aiming at realizing the OTEC commercialization.

OTEC is a power plant to use warm surface seawater to evaporate working fluid of ammonia-water, and then the ammonia vapor drives turbines to generate electricity. The ammonia vapor is cooled by cold deep seawater to be condensed and the reliquefied ammonia-water is recycled as the working fluid.
