A $2.6 million infusion is bringing Hydro Green Energy LLC one step closer to deploying its patented hydrokinetic technology in the United States.

The Houston hydrokinetic river power and tidal energy technology developer on Tuesday closed the Series A funding round led by Newport Beach, Calif.-based The Quercus Trust, an investor in renewable energy.

Hydro Green Energy intends to use the funds to build and operate hydrokinetic power projects that generate electricity exclusively from moving water (river currents, tidal currents and ocean currents) without having to first construct infrastructure.

The company expects to be generating electricity at its first project in Minnesota on the Mississippi River in August. The project will be the first commercially operational, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission-licensed hydrokinetic power project in the United States.
