ROSEBURG (AP) — Commissioners in Douglas County agreed to file a preliminary application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for a wave energy plant at the mouth of the Umpqua River at Winchester Bay.

The Scottish company Wavegen has expressed interest in producing electricity from the energy produced when waves pound the jetty.

The action taken Wednesday does not obligate the county or Wavegen to follow through with the project.
