Finavera Renewables, the specialist in renewable power sources has been awarded a permit to develop a 100MW innovative wave energy plant in Humboldt County, California. The permit approval was granted by the United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and is valid for a period of three years. It will allow Finavera to conduct various studies, including analyses of oceanographic conditions, commercial and recreational activities, and other impacts potentially associated with the planned project.
Finavera chief executive Jason Bak said the project could become the United States' first commercial wave energy installation. "This preliminary permit from FERC is a significant milestone that allows us to move forward on advanced planning for the project, and we look forward to working closely with the local community to ensure a successful project." He added that the project will illustrate how innovative technology can contribute to the new energy economy through the creation of renewable electricity, jobs and ultimately, shareholder value. "We're excited to be leaders in responding to the world's need for clean energy," Mr Bak said. In the past year, the company has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric for a 2MW project in California and also received the the first ever operating licence for a wave energy project in the United States for the Makah Bay Wave Pilot Project in Washington State. It is developing the Makah Bay Offshore Wave project to demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of wave energy conversion power plants in using ocean resources to generate clean, renewable energy. Finavera claims the research and demonstration of the AquaBuOY pilot plant would contribute to advances in the global ocean energy industry. Source:Independent.ie |
