WASHINGTON, May 28 (UPI) -- The U.S. energy secretary signed an energy agreement with Portuguese leaders.

Samuel Bodman and Portuguese Economy Minister Manuel Pinho signed a memorandum of understanding as part of their commitment to enhance global energy security and address climate change through the development of renewable energy, the U.S. Department of Energy announced.

"While there is certainly no 'silver bullet' that will solve the world's energy and environmental challenges today, we know that renewable energy is an indispensable component of the solution," Bodman said.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration on the policy and scientific and technical aspects of wave energy, including exchange of technical personnel, evaluations of demonstration projects and environmental testing and modeling.

The U.S. Department of Energy invited representatives of the Portuguese government to visit the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., to explore further opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
