DEVON has unique potential for renewable energy development and could play a major role in a range of projects according to a report put to Devon County Council.

The council's environment, economy and culture scrutiny committee was presented with a review of developments of off-shore renewable energy schemes and heard that with its two coastlines it could play a part in wave and tidal technology as well as off-shore wind farms.

Committee chairman Councillor Stuart Hughes said: "Devon's ambition to be the greenest county means Devon County Council must play a part in exploring the development of renewable energy in the region.

"We should look to share in employment opportunities, but any schemes must take careful consideration of the environment."
